Lois Marie Spack, 83, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025. She was born on September 18, 1942, in Stanley, North Dakota, to Carl Zimmerman and Florence Mae Ogden and was one of twelve children. At the age of 13, she was sent to live with her sister and never attended high school, but her clever, scrappy nature and boundless thirst for knowledge propelled her through life.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents and several siblings. She is survived by her four children, fifteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and many brothers and sisters.
Married at 17 to Rene Selig, with whom she had her four children, Lois went on to marry three more times- Robert Spack (married twice), and Sherrill Hansen. She lived in many different places and held various jobs, including owning her own restaurant, The Dry Dock, in Portland. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she also excelled as an elderly caregiver, proving that no challenge was too great. A lover and a fighter, she was not quick to show weakness but very quick to make friends. She continued to dream her whole life, remaining curious about new experiences and perspectives. Her strength, occasional stubbornness, and tender heart defined her, always ready with a warm hug, a captivating story, or a listening ear. She gave the best hugs and cuddles, radiating affection that made her heart a home to many. While feisty—known to wield a zucchini like a true garden warrior—and sometimes stubborn, her heart was always open and nurturing for those who needed it. She was a fun person and a child at heart, who could be silly with the best of them—children loved her, drawn to her playful spirit and endless joy.
Lois found joy in life’s simple and beautiful things: flowers blossoming in the spring, leaves turning in the fall, ice cream in bed, soft pajamas, chit chat and storytelling, crocheting for her family (especially grandchildren), and her beloved dog, Posie. She adored roses, butterflies, lavender, and all fragile and precious things. Her garden was a sanctuary where she nurtured hummingbirds, tended her rose garden with dedication to creating beauty in the world and sharing it with others, and trained birds to echo her whistled tunes. Music was her constant companion; there wasn’t a tune she couldn’t whistle or carry, whether in the kitchen singing and whistling, in the garden, or simply moving through her day. A gifted cook, she loved hosting family dinners, creating memories around her table. Her love for shopping shone brightest at Christmas and she delighted in giving generously. She found wisdom in the Serenity Prayer, which resonated with her resilient spirit.
Proud of her faith, Lois was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith was her constant companion in good times and bad. She was a creator and keeper of beauty, leaving a legacy of love, music, and warmth that will live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
A celebration of Lois’ life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at noon at 3721 Shadow Mountain Trail, Idaho Falls.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring her memory by planting a rose, adopting a pet, or sharing a song or hug with someone you love.
