A beautiful man, Joe Akiyama, 87, of Idaho Falls, passed away on March 15, 2024. 

Joe was born January 17, 1937, in Pocatello ID to Takuji and Toyono Fukumoto Akiyama. 

Joe resided in Idaho Falls the majority of his adult life. He was a wonderful cook. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He worked for the City of IF and US West. He also owned a motel in Salmon ID. and worked Land Services, Inc. doing right-of-way permits. He was a member of The Fraternal Order of Eagles and The Japanese American Citizens League. He was very industrious, after he bought new property in 2005, he built a foundation and moved a brick home (that was planned to be demolished) from Sunnyside through the city to Bear Avenue. 

Joe is survived by his friend Sonja Gayle Stone, brothers Soji and Kaiji Akiyama, sister Keyko (Steven) Siverman, sons Kelly Joe (spouse Marlene), Scott Akiyama and their mother Linda Cornelison Exler, stepson Kenneth Duane Esperum and step daughterin -law Rebecca Esperum. He has a granddaughter Corinne Yvonne Akiyama Robbins and two great-grandsons. He also has several step-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Janet Pearl Fletcher Akiyama, brother Kenji Akiyama, his sisters Chieko Akiyama Mayeda, Mikiko Akiyama Harada, stepson Keith Douglas Esperum and granddaughter Camille Lyn Akiyama. Funeral services will be held at the Buck Murphy Funeral Home. 825 E 17th St, Idaho Falls ID at 11:00 The family will visit with friends from 10:00 prior to services. Burial will be in the Fielding Cemetery

Visitation will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am with funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. Graveside at Fielding Memorial.
