Dorothy A. Cullen, 80, of Idaho Falls peacefully passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018, in the presence of loved ones.
She was born September 4, 1937, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Franklin Richard Feldsted and Berniece Gregg Feldsted. She attended schools in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1955 where she happily participated in activities and had many friends. Dorothy was a graceful dancer and enjoyed attending classes at the Mary Kasai Dance Studios from early childhood through her late teens. She performed tap and technically difficult en pointe ballet routines in numerous recitals and revues. Following high school, Dorothy was employed with Mountain States Telephone Company as a telephone operator. During this period she met the love of her life, Tony (Dan) Cullen, who was also working for Mountain Bell as a cable lineman following service in the Marine Corp. They were married at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Pocatello in June 1957 and were blessed with two daughters, Tracy in 1958 and Lisa in 1961. The Cullen home was filled with laughter, and the sixties and seventies were a busy, happy period for Dorothy and her family. She was proud to be a homemaker and was an attentive mother, immaculate housekeeper and a wonderful cook. In 1967 the family relocated to Idaho Falls when Tony accepted a promotion to construction manager with Mountain Bell. Dorothy returned to full-time employment in 1977 and worked for the next twenty years until her retirement for INEL contractors Aerojet Nuclear and EG&G Idaho in various capacities including office administrator and technical writer. Dorothy had great style and was incredibly well read; she loved to play bridge and possessed a keen intellect. She kindled a love of literature and books in her children and was instrumental in the creation of the first library at Linden Park Elementary in Idaho Falls. She was known for being able to complete the New York Times or any crossword puzzle in minutes. Her insight, wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Ann (Farren) Spaulding of El Dorado, Arkansas; sister Karen (Dan) Ewart of Allyn, Washington; brother Richard Feldsted of Banning, California; granddaughters Jessica (Andy) Hobson, of Sandy, Utah, and Genevieve Spaulding of Logan, Utah; grandsons Stephen Spaulding of Auburn, California, Matthew Spaulding of Selma, California, Anthony (Emily) Norman of Fort Leonard, Missouri, Shane Norman of Idaho Falls; son-in-law Mike Norman of Idaho Falls; ten great-grandchildren; two nephews, two nieces and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Tony, sister-in-law Amparo "Ampy" Feldsted, and her daughter Lisa Bernadette Norman. A graveside service for friends and family will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 23, 2018, at Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff at Teton Post Acute Care and the Encompass hospice nurses for their skilled, compassionate care. The family requests donations be made in Dorothy's name to the American Lung Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Miller Hann Funeral Home.
